May 18 Glocal Project

The May 18 Glocal Projects are reasoned to expand international solidarity based on the May 18 Spirit. Global democracy circumstances, undergoing changes, are affecting Korea’s democracy. At the same time, global civil society expects and gives attention to South Korea’s role to promote democracy. Democracy and human rights issues in each country require a more systematic and strategic approach at the international level. The May 18 Glocal Center has been engaged in various international activities through networking and joint cooperation in order to contribute to enhancing democracy and human rights in the world by spreading the May 18 spirit.

The May 18 Glocal Issue Monitoring Report

The May 18 Glocal Issue Monitoring Report is a status report conducted to promote the spread of the May 18 spirit based on active cooperation and response to international democracy and human rights issues.

May 18 Global Center of the May 18 Foundation aims to publicize the current status of democracy and human rights in countries around the world through continuous publication of reports.

The May 18 Glocal Issue Monitoring Report, which is created by various experts’ research and writing, is a valuable resource to help others understand the current status of democracy and human rights in each country including the overall situation and background.

The May 18 Gwangju Democracy Fund

Based on the experience of Asia Grassroots Projects(2017-2021) and ‘Myanmar Democratic Movement Supporting Funding Project (2021-2022), the May 18 Foundation intends to continue developing international support and solidarity.

Through the May 18 Gwangju Democracy Fund, the May 18 Foundation delivers help in the names of 「Gwangju」 and 「May 18」 to all parts of the world where democracy and human rights are seriously violated, and continues vigorous activities to promote global democracy and human rights.

The May 18 Gwangju Democracy Fund, which has been composed by various funds such as citizens' warm interest and participation, foundation funds, and operating profits, supports the development of global democracy and human rights in consideration of necessity, urgency, and field.

The May 18 Gwangju Democracy Fund is open for all the overseas civil society organizations in fields of human rights and democracy. Call for applications is open around April every year, and for more details, please refer to the link below.

English Webzine “Mayzine”

Mayzine is an English webzine published by the May 18 Glocal Center, the May 18 Foundation. This word is a compound word with May and Magazine combined together, trying to hold the meaning of our will to tell the stories of May.

Mayzine, published its 24th issue recently, has been published twice every year in the first and second half of the year and has covered various articles including news of the Foundation, interviews, emergency issues, and news of activists’ special writings about democracy and human rights.

Mayzine, which contains the May 18 Foundation’s international solidarity activities, will become an activity report for the May 18 Foundation, an NGO committee of the special consultation status of the UN Economic and Social Council.

Through Mayzine, the May 18 Foundation plays a role as a platform to inform the state violence around the world and human rights abuses, bringing out stories of democracy and human rights status.
