Recognizing the magnitude of globalization and the overarching influence of information and communication technology, international solidarity has been identified as one of the core tasks of The May 18 Memorial Foundation. It envisions international solidarity with other countries and organizations based on the common goals and mutual interests of promoting the spirit of the may 18 Gwangju Democratic Uprising, advocating human rights, and protecting the gains of peace and democracy.

The International Solidarity Program will focus on partnership, participation, exchange and networking with civil society groups in Asia and the rest of the world. In particular it will: 1) conduct regular exchange of experience and expertise with governments, human rights institutions, groups for democracy and peace, and other civil society groups in Asia; 2) establish a proactive mechanism for collective action and coordination 3) conduct activities and host forums which introduce international issues and participate in international conference and gatherings abroad 4) build bridges of communication between the civil society of Asia and the rest of the globe through the internet and publications of journals, newsletters, brochures and books, both in Korean and English; and 5) facilitate an exchange of experience and technology (expertise, know-how and human resources) which goes beyond solely financial support.

Message from Chanho Kim

Director, Culture and Solidarity Team

At this time when the world is becoming highly connected through various information and communication technologies, it is essential to have a web presence. The May 18 Memorial Foundation in its effort to maintain and sustain its existing network continues to upgrade and develop the English section of its website. This way we can keep updating you with our program and activities.

We do not wish our website to be just a static online brochure but we deem it to be a dynamic portal to interact with you our partners, fellow networkers and discoverers of this site. We have news and updates to keep you informed, we have a forum to engage you in discussion, a section to download resources, and you can also subscribe to our prompting service to inform you of our new postings. You can also join our google groups and add information about your own organization.

We also welcome your help in translating our English brochure into your language so that other people can benefit from our services. Additionally, you can help promote us by emailing your contacts a link to our site, or downloading our widget to decorate your website or blog site.

Also, through our website we hope to promote and support your campaigns, advocacies and programs. We can post on our site your news and updates so that you can reach a wider audience on the net.

We believe that the usefulness of our website can be gauged by the interactivity it generates and it is you our partners, friends, supporters, and network that will make this possible. So do let us know, through in our forum, the things that you would like to see, read and use through our site. Though we can¡¯t promise to address them all, we will do our best to make our site useful and relevant.

 Our best wishes!
