Verso publisher in the UK made a revised edition on the subject of the May 18 Gwangju uprising. The original book’s title was Gwangju Diary: Beyond Death, Beyond the Darkness of the Age; it was published at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1999. It was founded on the records of those who were arrested and tortured during the period of the May 18 democratization for four years from 1981. It has been considered the first historic material because it systematizes Gwangjucitizens’ perspectives and testimonies of those who protested at the time. In particular, it significantly contributed to proving the Korean ArmyCountermeasure committee distorted the firing situation, for example, the moment of the first shooting on May 18, 1980. After 32 years, the Korean edition containing additional evidence, such as radio logs of the martial law army, daily records of soldiers after the May 18 Gwangju uprising, testimonies of the citizen army, and so on, was newly published. So this revised edition is the latest translated one in English. Therefore, its title was changed to Gwangju Uprising: TheRebellion for Democracy in South Korea. Verso publisher says, “Gwangju Uprising” The May 18Memorial Foundation thinks it is helpful in rightly understanding the truth without distortion.
