The Ongoing Demonstration Demanding Release of Thai Pro-Democracy Activists Continues
The demonstration demanding the release of Arnon Nampa – the winner of the 2021 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights – and other Pro-Democracy activists is still ongoing on an everyday basis. Arnon Nampa, insisting on monarchy reforms, was detained for alleged violations of lese-majeste, sedition, and other offences on February 9, 2021. This demonstration emphasizing the release of these Pro-Democracy activists is a 112-minute daily protest – 112 as a number which stands for Article 112 of the Thai Criminal Code related to lese-majeste law.
The growing anti-government demonstration starting from last year has led to the forbidden criticism against the royal family, and Arnon Nampa, including other human rights activists, have been imprisoned for violations of lese-majeste, sedition, and other offences.
In February 2021, the May 18 Memorial Foundation had issued a statement requesting the release of Thai Pro-Democracy activists and recently sent an official notice to the Thai Embassy asking for the release of Arnon Nampa to the Thai government so that he can attend the award ceremony for the 2021 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights.
The May 18 Memorial Foundation sincerely hopes that the Thai government stops the oppression of the pro-democracy movement of its people, supporting the democracy in Thailand.
