Koreans sing for Myanmar in commemoration of Gwangju Democratization Movement

- Korean citizens send relay video messages in the Stand Sing With Myanmar campaign

- Campaign proceeds to be given to Myanmar Gwangju Solidarity (May 18 Memorial Foundation) and Myanmar pro-democracy protesters

May 3, 2021, Seoul, Korea -- I support democracy in Myanmar. In remembrance of Koreas May 18 Democratization Struggle, in which Gwangju citizens demonstrated against Korean martial law government in 1980 resulting in a bloody crackdown, everyday citizens in Korea are now on the front lines condemning Myanmars military coup detat and massacre of civilians. The Stand Sing With Myanmar campaign launched in cooperation with the May 18 Memorial Foundation will publish video messages throughout the month of May that convey support and empathy to the people of Myanmar through songs, letters, instrumental performances, dance, and prayer, as revealed on May 3.

Regular citizens of all walks of life, including students, singers, painters, writers, songwriters, designers, and pastors, are participating in the campaign. Campaign director Lee Nadan said, Through the relay video messages, we would like to send our support to the the Myanmar pro-democracy movement even just a bit, adding, Ultimately, what we want is an end to the brutal slaughter of civilians by Myanmars military and the protection of democracy in Myanmar.

After Myanmars military led a coup detat this past February, Myanmar security forces have been indiscriminately massacring protesters against military rule. The Stand Sing With Myanmar campaign is a solidarity movement among Koreans remembering the May 18 Democratization Struggle while denouncing the situation in Myanmar and sending Myanmar citizens messages of support.

All proceeds from the Stand Sing with Myanmar campaign will be directed to local Myanmar organizations, journalists, lawyers, and medical staff through collaboration with Myanmar Gwangju Solidarity (May 18 Memorial Foundation). The campaign planners said, Funds can be raised through the account in the video, adding, We ask for the participation of citizens who support the democratization protests in Myanmar.

This relay video message campaign will be held throughout the month of May, with 31 videos of individuals or teams video messages, singing, and instrumental performances uploaded to the Youtube channel With Myanmar each day. Ordinary citizens that are participating in the production are planning to show their support through renditions of Korean and international songs such as Kim Kwang-seoks With the Heart to Forget You and John Lennons Imagine, Burmese songs, letter reading, and instrumental performances. Burmese subtitles have been added to the videos by volunteer language majors to allow for Myanmar citizens protesting against military rule to watch the productions.
