Statement from the Network of Gwangju Prize for Human Rights (NLG)

Laureates of Gwangju Prize for Human Rights

Demand Halt to Genocide in Gaza

We undersigned laureates of the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights condemn the Israeli Government and its Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the six months of terror they have unleashed on the Palestinians of Gaza. We are heartbroken by the killing of more than 40,000 Palestinians killed by the Israeli Defence Forces, which have uncaringly extinguished the lives of children, elderly, handicapped and other innocents.

We consider that the targeted killing of Palestinian civilians by Israel amounts to genocide, part of a plan to empty Gaza of its original population as well as those who fled there in successive waves after 1948. We are appalled by the inability of the United Nations system to force the Netanyahu Government to halt the slaughter. We find the United States, in particular, culpable for the military and political support it has extended to Israel even as the genocide has unfolded, as well as for its role in preventing the Security Council from adopting urgent resolutions.

We pronounce as completely abhorrent and against international humanitarian law the application of collective punishment on Palestinians, the blockade of Gaza, and the enforced starvation of hundreds of thousands.

We welcome the submissions made to the International Court of Justice by the Government of South Africa, and others, demanding a halt to the genocidal actions of the Netanyahu Government and redress under international law. We believe that the case urgently requires provisional measures by the Court directed at Israel, even before it comes to a final decision on the charge of genocide.

We Gwangju Human Rights Laureates demand that the governments of the Global North use moral and material pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for an immediate end to the suffering of the people of Gaza, security for those in the West Bank, and accountability for the ongoing genocide. We also call on the countries and societies of the Global South and others who are independent of the Netanyahu Government to come together to respond to the Gaza genocide, and create conditions for humanitarian, rule-based conduct of international affairs. We demand the abandonment of double standards where some communities and identities are regarded as more equal than others.
