Established the Awards for Commemorating the Jürgen Hinzpeters Spirit of Journalism
3 Awards for competition categories and an award for the Non-competition category
A Trophy and 10,000 USD dollars will be given to each categorys winner

■ Award to the video journalists who cover and report the scene for Democracy, Human rights, and peace in the global field
The Hintzpeter Awards, established by the May 18 Memorial Foundation and the Korea Video Journalist Association in 2021, will begin its second international public application on June 1st.
The Hinzpeter Awards, which honors the journalism spirit of the German video reporter Jürgen Hinzpeter, who revealed the May 18 Democratic Uprising to the world, will recognize and award video reporters covering and reporting citizens noble fights for striving to protect democracy, human rights, and peace around the world.
In 2021, Mikhail Arshynski, a video reporter who accused Belarus of fraudulent elections that prevented the establishment of a democratic government, received the World at A Crossroads Award. Norman and Colin(nickname), video reporters who accused Myanmars military regime of oppression and violence, won the Award for News. Bruno Federico, who reported the migrants dangerous journey passing through the "Darien Gap" to the United States, received the Award for Features. In addition, for the "MAY GWANGJU Award," a non-competition category, video journalist Young-Gil Yoo was selected as the winner in recognition of his initial coverage and report of the martial law militarys entry into Geumnam-ro, Gwangju.
■ The Hinzpeter Awards Organizing Committee(The HAOC, hereafter) determined the application and award schedule.
In 2022, the second year, Mr.Dong-Nyun Jung(Chairperson of the May 18 Memorial Foundation) and Mr.Jun-Young Rha(President of the Korea Video Journalist Association) will be co-chairperson of the HAOC. And Mr.Gi-Bong Lee, the May 18 Memorial Foundation secretary-general, will be the Director of the tasks.
The HAOC will complete preparations for screening the contest in May, start an international public application on June 1, select winners at the end of August, and hold the "2022 Hinzpeter Awards Ceremony in Gwangju on October 27. The ceremony is held in Seoul in odd-numbered years and Gwangju in even-numbered years.
The May 18 Memorial Foundation and the Korea Video Journalist Association held a press event to explain the details of the application and release the official promotional videos on May 12, 2 p.m., at the May 18 Memorial Cultural Center.
At the press conference, the HAOC released a video of the German Ambassador to Korea Michael Reiffenstuels congratulatory speech. Michael said that it is a great honor that the Awards name came from German journalist Jürgen Hintzpeter. He added that democracy does not work without free and independent information
The HAOC appointed Ahmed Assar (Video Editor for Asia at Reuters - Chief Editor in Photo), Sharon Roobol (Al Jazeera TV producer), Bruno Federico (Winner of the Award for Features 2021), Tae-Kyoung Seo (Former MBC Video Journalist, Director of MBC PLAYBE), Jay Lee (The May 18 Memorial Foundations senior researcher), Sonho Kim (Primary Research Fellow at Korea Press Foundation), Hyung-Sil Park (Executive Producer at Arirang TV), and Young-Gil Chae (Professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies at Seoul). The HAOC plans to select winners through fair and authoritative screening to help the award grow into a representative international press award worldwide.
■ 3 Awards in Competition Categories, 1 Award in Non-competition Category, Each Awarding USD 10,000 in prize money and trophies
The Hinzpeter Awards will include a total of four categories: three competition categories (The World at A Crossroads Award, Award for News, and Award for Features) and one non-competition category (the MAY GWANGJU Award), and each category will receive USD 10,000 in prize money and trophies.
