To Be Held Virtually
In an effort to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising in the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic, the may 18 Memorial Foundation will hold a virtual ceremony at 17:00 on May 18, 2020. It is under the theme of "Celebrating the May 18 Democratic Uprising - the 40-year-long Path to Koreas Democracy" and is mainly for foreigners who dont otherwise have an opportunity of celebrating the uprisings 40th anniversary.
The event will be co-0organized byh the May 18 Memorial Foundation and the Gwangju International Center with the City of Gwangju as a sponsor. During the ceremony, congratulatory remarks will be shared by 10 of the Foundations international partners, and 6 mayors from different international cities, including Gwangju and San Antonio in Texas, USA, and 17 of the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights laureates who are Basil Fernando in Hong Kong, Nam-su Jang and Jeong-hyeon Moon in Korea, Dandeniya Jayanthi and Nandana Manatunga in Sri Landka, Angkhana Neelapaijit and Jatupat Boonpattararaksa in Thailand, Malalai Joya in Afghanistan, Min Ko Naming in Myanmar, Sushil Pyakurel in Nepal, Hermien(Tempo), Irina(Dialita), and Bedjo Untung in Indonesia, Adilur Rahman Khan in Bangladesh, Mansoureh(Mothers of Khavaran), Shuimeng(Sombath Somphone) in Laos, Thomas Fann(Bersih) in Malaysia, Serge Bambara in Burkina Faso, and Joanna Carino in the Philippines.
Web invitations will be sent out to the Foundations parner individuals and organizations beginning Friday, May 15, 2020.
