We strongly condemn the Myanmar Military Junta!

Withdraw the national emergency and hold elections by 2023

We strongly condemn the Myanmar Military Junta and Min Aung Hlaing, the Army General, who has taken on the role of Prime Minister through a military coup.

Min Aung Hlaing, the Army General, declared in his speech, “We will fulfil the provisions of the national emergency by August 2023”, and added, “We promise to make the general election” on 1st of August. This is to extend the period of the national emergency to two years and seven months when Min Aung Hlaing deposed Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese politician.

Military Junta claims that the coup can be justified as the 2020 election which resulted in landslide victory of the Democratic National Alliance (NLD) - led by Aung San Suu Kyi – was an illegal, rigged election.

The lives of the Myanmar people have been destroyed by the Myanmar Military Junta. Myanmar Military Junta suppressed citizens who resisted the coup, killed more than 1,000 people, and arrested and detained around 6,000 citizens in total up to date.

The cases of COVID-19 and the number of death have been increasing recently, but the Myanmar Military Junta is unable to come up with any solutions. In addition, Min Aung Hlaing is denying his mistakes as an Army General who self-proclaimed prime minister, extending the period of the national emergency. This is a serious crime that can never be forgiven.

The Myanmar Military Junta must now stop the repression of the citizens, and immediately release those who are detained, prosecuted and arrested. The Myanmar military Junta, which has caused economic collapse and the spread of COVID-19, must resign in the early stage.

The NGOs and the international organizations, including the United Nations, should dispatch international inspectors to investigate the bloodshed and the actual situation, and should provide humanitarian assistance for peace and security such as the support of COVID-19 vaccination, medical dispatch and refugee relief.

August. 2. 2021.
