The Chairperson of the May 18 Memorial Foundation
- We also carry out various projects and activities such as educational programs, promotion, solidarity programs, and truth & research project. The foundation publishes educational materials that could be utilized in schools and civil societies and tries to share the value of the May 18 Democratization Movement through teacher training. In addition, various culture and art programs are prepared by the foundation so that people can experience the May 18 Spirit.
The May 18 Archives are designated as the UNESCO’s Memory of World Register, which means that the international community recognizes the valuable spirit of Gwangju citizens that fought against the illegitimate military regime. The May 18 Democratization Movement has now become a meaningful history beyond South Korea for human rights activities in Asia and in the world.
The foundation jointly established the master degree for NGO-governmental
organization program with Chonnam National University in order to promote the ability of human rights activists in Asia and Africa regions. In addition, we are trying to spread the Gwangju Spirit via meetings of the laureates of the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights, participants of the Gwangju Asia Forum, and the May 18 Academy.
We will reach closer to citizens and deepen solidarity with other organizations in the world. The foundation will also take a lead in the appropriate history education for the next generation and realize the Gwangju Spirit by supporting minorities in the world and victims of national violence. We hope that you would have a continuous interest in the foundation.
